A border collie called Sam, wearing a yellow lifejacket has a unique task. He is responsible for rounding up the Canada geese on the river at Stratford upon Avon. This is a vital role that allows the swans to glide up and down the river delighting the crowds of tourists.
Sam is part of a project designed to keep the waterfront in front of the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre clear of geese and the mess they leave. The seven year old dog is taken close to the geese by his owner, Richard Walsh a boatman on the river.
This daily routine sees Sam jumping into the water, then with the boat they form a pincer movement herding the geese away from the town.
The project is co-ordinated by Julie Bennett who says, "Sam is the star of the show. He shows a tremendous aptitude for his work."
Mr Walsh said, "He is very intelligent. The extraordinary thing is that he focuses on the geese and leaves the swans and ducks completely alone."
