Two new insurance products have been launched by the Halifax. The products are Halifax Pet Insurance and Halifax Pet Insurance eXtra, and are aimed at pet owners who want to insure their pet against illness and necessary treatment.

The premiums cost £3.50 each month for cats and £4.10 for dogs. The policies will both cover annual vet’s bills, but Halifax Pet Insurance covers up to £1,000 whereas the eXtra policy will cover up £6,000 in vet bills.

The policies do not limit cover to pets of a certain age and the insurance cover has been given a five star rating by Defaqto, an independent product research company.

Customers are afforded peace of mind with these insurance policies, if their pet needs long term treatment. John Bennett, head of products at Halifax Pet Insurance, said: "With Halifax Pet Insurance, pet owners can now get the necessary long-term treatment for their pets on an annual basis, without having to spend a fortune on vet's fees."

The insurance cover will also protect pet owners in the event of their pet being stolen. It has been widely reported that the theft of dogs in the UK is an area of crime that is on the increase.
