Check your puppy's health

Tue, 05 Dec 2006

If you have bought a new puppy or planning to get one, then prepare yourself as it is a big responsibility.

Major areas that will concern you most in caring your pup will be feeding, preventative shots, worming, and a good eye for disease . As a pup's life is filled with dangers and can easily get lost in the big world unless you take care of it.

The first thing to do is find a vet for your pet, don't leave it until there is an emergency. It can sometimes be hard to find a suitable vet for your pup. Other dog owner's may be able to provide you with valuable advice .

The next step is to get the pup vaccinated against Distemper, Hepatitis, Rabies and Leptospirosis.

Every year many dogs and pups die due to Distemper. Hepatitis is another deadly disease where the pet shows no symptoms and dies. Rabies is also a major threat, whereas Leptospirosis destroys the kidneys. These can all be prevented by vaccination.

Worms are very common among puppies. Your pup could suffer from roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and many others. A vet will routinely carry out a stool test to look out for these.

If your puppy falls ill, the first signs of illness may be a loss of appetite, listlessness, eyes become dull or his coat seems coarse and dry. This indicates that something is wrong. At the first sign of a problem, you should consult your vet.

A puppy with good health is characterised by playfulness, alertness, bright eyes, a good appetite, and a healthy coat. If you find anything different from these normal habits, then it indicates that your puppy needs special attention or a visit to a vet.
