The four legged crime fighter has successfully apprehended more criminals in four years than his two legged colleagues.
Ged the German shepherd is well know in Liverpool and has a reputation for getting his jaws stuck into criminals and not letting go.
Ged won four awards in the 46th National Police Dog Trials which was held in Northern Ireland, beating dogs from 27 other forces to win.
His handler PC Stephen Laughton of Merseyside Police is proud of Ged who has helped to catch 20 criminals and put them in jail.
He said, "While some dogs will just bit once to bring you down, Ged bites and hold on until the criminals are captured. He sees the people he captures as prey.
"Im delighted Ged has won the National event. I didnt expect us to win the big one."
Police forces across England and Wales use 2,500 dogs to help catch criminals. They are much used in detecting drugs, explosives and human remains. Dogs are also used for tracking criminals, for crowd and prison work .
Not all dogs are suitable to undergo the necessary training . Conversely some dogs are unsuitable pets because they have high energy levels or are too demanding are probably ideal.
The training is completed over a period of 14 weeks after which time the dog should be ready to work with a handler. The handler and the dog will then become a team and will work together until they are seven or eight years old.
