Londoners baffled by sighting of a giant 20ft dog from the A40

Thu, 04 May 2006

Commuters using the A40 to travel into London will see a strange sight – a 20 foot high inflatable rescue dog sitting on the top of the Vanguard Building .

The big black and white dog will be looking down on Londoners until 29 May. His presence is to raise awareness of a new state-of-the-art dog re-homing centre that has just been opened by the Dogs Trust in West London. The new centre based in Harefield near Uxbridge is in addition to 15 other re-homing centres across the country.

The charity Dogs Trust is the largest of its kind in the UK, looking after the welfare of dogs and they provide care for over 13,500 abandoned and stray dogs each year.

Clarissa Baldwin said, "The new centre is already proving to be a huge success and actually re-homed its 100th rescue dog at the weekend, only four weeks after opening its doors. Glen, a black and white Border Collie was re-homed to the Chamberlain family from Middlesex . Staff, are hoping the new centre will offer hope to thousands of unwanted dogs each year, which is great news for the 105,000 stray dogs that are found abandoned each year across the UK ."

The Harefield centre is set in 16 acres of farmland. There are 75 kennels that have under-floor heating and a glass frontage, which has a calming effect on the dogs.

Other facilities on offer at the centre is a Real Life Behaviour Suite with a one way glass for making assessments, a Veterinary Suite, a Grooming Suite, open air paddocks, a Puppy Block and a Barn used for giving talks.

The centre also has a picnic area and an educational wildlife walk.
