Cure your Dog for Osteoarthritis

Mon, 06 Nov 2006

Recent research at University College of Dublin (UCD) shows that nutraceuticals play major role in the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs .

In the UK, VetPlus Ltd is the leading supplier of veterinary nutraceuticles and makers of SYNOQUIN. The company proved that 70 days of treatment with oral glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulphate (Glu/CS) removed the clinical signs of osteoarthritis in dogs.

Russell Roan, Veterinary Technical Manager at VetPlus Ltd, said, "It is estimated that 20% of dogs over one year of age suffer from some form of osteoarthritis, with particular breeds more susceptible than others.

"In chronic cases, the signs include stiffness in the joint, decreased range of motion and reduced joint support. The purpose of this research was to determine whether nutraceuticals can play an integral role in management of the disease . I’m delighted to say the results were very positive."

The medicine was tested during a trial when eight vets examined client-owned dogs. Samples were taken from the animals and they were examined for haematology, clinical chemistry and faecal occult blood tests, prior to the study starting.

The same radiologist at the UCD Veterinary Hospital studied radiographs of the affected joints.

Dogs were given doses of SYNOQUIN or carprofen. The vets examined the severity of clinical signs and examined the dogs at the 14th, 42nd, and 70th day. The results recorded were based on a subjective evaluation with vets using a comprehensive scoring system to measure lameness, joint mobility, pain on palpation, weight bearing and overall clinical condition.

Russell Roan said, "As our understanding and awareness of osteoarthritis grows the number of therapies and treatments available increases. Osteoarthritis is a very painful condition and causes major discomfort for the animal which is why every effort should be made to ensure a comprehensive treatment regime is available.

"Nutraceuticals are being used to great effect in human medicine and this research now proves that high quality nutraceuticals like SYNOQUIN can have a place in the long-term management of osteoarthritis in companion animals."
