Life saving dogs

Wed, 18 Apr 2007

Staffordshire bull terriers generally do not have a very good reputation, however two such dogs from Bridlington saved their owners life.

The two dogs, Tye and Stone alerted owner, Vicki Kemp, 22, when a fire started in the immersion heater in her Bridlington home .

Vicki has nothing but praise for her dogs and calls them her lifesavers.

Vicki said, "I heard a strange popping noise, but shrugged it off. It sounded like it was outside."

"Tye and Stone came running into the room, barking like mad. Tye kept running back into the hallway, banging his head on the door . He was going mad."

It was only when she opened a cupboard door to find the immersion heater on fire and the flames were on the verge of taking hold of the house .

She said, "There was smoke everywhere. It was an electrical fault so everything was melting. There was paint in there so the whole place could have gone up, but I didn't hear it."

The fire brigade was called and they managed to extinguish the blaze.

Vicki said, "They're both highly intelligent, really brainy dogs and I treat them like my babies. They understand what you are saying to them and they are properly trained."

"They'll get extra pampering after saving my life. They understand what they have done for me. They're going to get loads of thank you presents from me. I treat them like children really."

Bill Dellaway, from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Welfare Charity said, "They are terrible guard dogs when it comes to property, but if they think their owner is in danger they will give plenty of warning."

"When their owner treats them right they are very loyal and protective."
