Lifesaver Dog to be Awarded George Cross Equivalent

Tue, 11 Dec 2007

A springer spaniel that saved a woman’s life is to be awarded the equivalent of the George Cross . The dog, named ‘Ghillie’, will receive the animals’ equivalent of the award after he saved 61-year old Mary Wilson’s life following an epileptic fit. Mrs Wilson, who lives in Fair Isle on the Orkney Islands, suffered the fit when Ghillie was nine months old.

Having seen Mrs Wilson have the fit, Ghillie ran to a group of men who were working nearby, and forced them to follow him by repeatedly barking at them until they followed him. The men then found Mrs Wilson and were able to call her an ambulance which took her to hospital. Mrs Wilson is now back at home having recovered.
