Mon, 22 Jan 2007

Locals of Donegall Pass, Northern Ireland reported a pit bull terrier to the police as it was attacking other pets and scaring children. According to local residents the dog was believed to be on Vernon Street.

The dog was later shot dead by the police who said that it had attacked a small white dog and had tried to attack children.

Peter Pollock, a local resident who witnessed the incident said, "I didn't have the nerve to go over and attack the dog to try and help the other dog. Had it been a child, I might have thought different.

"But the dog was there for seven and a half to 10 minutes, just tearing the other dog to bits. All the children were watching. It was scaring the kids - the state that the other dog was in."

The local authorities in Northern Ireland have put restrictions on dangerous dogs and their domestication. According to one of the rules, owners of such dogs have to be given a limited time period to hand such dogs over to the authorities without any fear of prosecution.

A spokesperson for Ballymena Council recalled a pit bull attack on a family . In the attack, Sean and Deirdre Doherty, their son Ben and a family friend escaped with only minor injuries . However, their pet Labrador, Troy, was killed in the attack.

Furthermore, Ballymena Council became the first in the UK to hold such an amnesty against the domestication dangerous dogs.
