Homeless in Sheffield can be adopted

In Sheffield, homeless dogs can now be adopted through the City Council's website .

The Animal Control Service at the council has developed the site to let people view the dogs in their kennels first before actually going to see them. The site gives details about the dog and general information about caring for a dog and the adoption service itself.

Each year wardens pick up between 500 – 600 dogs that are found wandering in the streets. In the last three years Sheffield’s Animal Control Service has picked up 1,765.

In total 24.7 per cent of the dogs picked up were re-housed. Other dogs were reunited with their owners, sent to rescue centres or in some cases put to sleep.

Putting to dogs to sleep is the last resort, in Sheffield about 5 per cent have been put down. Dogs considered for this are ones that are too vicious, have serious health problems or are badly injured eg in road traffic accidents .

Councillor Gill Furniss, the Council's Cabinet Adviser for Sustainable Environment said, "We are proud of the Animal Control Service and their excellent record in avoiding the unnecessary destruction of dogs that they collect."

"Our staff work, very closely with other organisations to promote responsible dog ownership and to find someone who can help with finding new homes for the dogs that we pick up."
