Lancashire police seized four suspected dangerous dogs and arrested ten people in a series of raids in Accrington.
The police and RSPCA carried out a joint investigation where they found two caged pit bull type dogs at a derelict house in Crossland Street. The police believe that one of the addresses raided was used as a dog training centre.
At other addresses police found another two dogs that are banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act along with Class A drugs.
In total ten arrests were made relating to animal welfare offences under the Act. Police also seized veterinary kits and an industrial freezer containing, what looked like blood. Dogs found at the houses were taken to the RSPCA kennels to be examined by the Government vet to identify the dogs breed.
Chief Inspector Mike Butcher, RSPCA Special Operations Unit, said that dog fighting was "abhorrent and cruel."
He added, "Dog-fighting was banned in this country over 150 years ago, but still continues today."
"The RSPCA is determined to give the message that this is not acceptable."
"We are extremely pleased with the operation today and would like to thank the Lancashire Constabulary for their help and co-operation throughout."
Detective Inspector Pete Simm said the raids shows that the police are committed stopping those who house dangerous dogs or participate in dog fighting.
He said, "I would like to reassure members of the community this is not a widespread problem but an isolated and localised issue."
