Hettie, a two-year-old Norwegian Buhund from Wolverhampton, and Keri, a seven-year-old Spaniel Cross from Walsall have been shortlisted for the hunt for Britains Hero Hounds.
Both the dogs act as hearing dogs for their owners will compete against 23 other dogs in the race for the gong.
Hettie's owner, Ian Joyce, was born deaf . He says that his life has been turned around since she came into his life.
Mr. Joyce said, "Hettie came to live with me on in June 2005, and life has not been the same since."
"There has been much laughter where there was previously none. She has made me aware of sounds that I no longer hear such as the doorbell, alarm clock and so on. She has given me companionship, independence, peace of mind, but the greatest things she has given me are trust and the removal of fear."
Keris owner Mel Smith explains how her life was saved by her hearing dog Keri.
Keri saved Smiths life when the caravan the pair were living in caught fire and Keri alerted Smith of the danger by knocking her knees and back.
Mrs Smith said, "In my eyes she truly is a real little hero ."
"She is a perfect partner, and my best friend ."
The Hero Hound competition has been organised to mark the 25th anniversary of the charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
