Recent research shows that 40% of the dog population in the UK is overweight, 15% of which are obese. A dog is said to be obese when it is 20% above the recommended weight range for the particular breed and gender.
In general, nearly 1 million dogs in the UK are clinically obese.
Yarvitan, new diet pills for dogs, will soon be available on the market and its aimed at those dog owners and lazy 'pet lovers' who have overweight pets. Yarvitan contains a chemical called 'mitratapide' that helps to control weight in dogs, by reducing a particular protein in the dogs gut to help absorb fats from their diet. It also acts as an appetite-suppressant to make your pet feel less hungry.
The dog will be given Yarvitan for an 8-week period, with 3-weeks on, 2-weeks off then on for a further 3-weeks. The dog may show some side effects including diarrhoea and vomiting and that would loose 6-7% of its original body weight.
Although Yarvitan is a good way to reduce weight fast, but there is nothing better than a good balanced diet, combined with regular exercise and mental stimulation.
The ratio of obese dogs suffering from health problems like arthritis, high blood pressure, poor liver function and diabetes are much more than normal dogs. It has been medically proven that obese dogs may die at least two years earlier than a healthy dog.
Pet owners must bear in mind that they have total control over their pets diet and health. Having a healthy pet is a big responsibility and allowing your dog to become overweight is both dangerous and neglectful.
