Football legend supports blind tekker and his guide dog

Thu, 17 May 2007

Rangers’ legend, Arthur Numan is being thanked for his fundraising support of blind trekker Scott Cunningham, by having a guide dog puppy named after him.

Scott, 35, from Larkhall is currently trekking through the Yorkshire Dales as part of his 268 mile walk across The Pennine Way accompanied by his guide dog Travis.

Due to make a presentation to Arthur Numan, Scott said, "I will be presenting Arthur Numan with a framed picture of his namesake Guide Dog pup for his amazing support with the walk last year."

Iain Sinclair, Club Secretary of The Arthur Numan Loyal Rangers Supporters Club said the footballer was thrilled to have a guide dog puppy named after him.

Mr Sinclair said, "This is a nice thought from the promoters of Travis Trek and will no doubt be appreciated by Arthur who is a very charitable and genuinely nice guy."

"It would have to be a thorough-bred though because Arthur is a world-class footballer ."

Scott is hoping that his super-fit partner, who acts as his eyes on the trail, will finish the walk in 16 days. This will make Travis the first guide dog to complete The Pennine Walk. His other achievements have been to trek across the West Highland Way, the Speyside Way and The Southern Upland Way in the Scottish Borders with his companion, Scot.

The pairs achievements have so far raised 40,000 pounds to breed, train and support guide dogs in the UK.

The money raised from this walk will be used to fully train and care for Guide Dog puppies that will eventually be placed with new owners helping visually-impaired people lead fuller lives
