Dog owners are being encouraged to microchip their pets, with the aim of reducing the number of lost pets and incidents of dognapping.
Lost dogs wearing just a collar and tag are rarely reunited with its owner, meaning the pets are having to be euthanized as it is unknown who owns them.
For a fee of around £10, and taking just a few seconds, dogs can be painlessly fitted with a tiny microchip about the size of a grain of rice. Once inside, the chip can be read by a scanner, but is undetectable to the human eye. With each dog fitted with a chip registered on the National Pet Register, any lost dog that is found can be scanned and their owners contacted and informed of their pets whereabouts.
Compulsory microchipping has also been called for by ministers in Scotland, after a flurry of attacks raised concerns over the presence of illegal breeds in the UK.
