Hundreds of Dog Owners Gather to Campaign for Pit Bulls

Tue, 30 Oct 2007

In Indianapolis this weekend, over 200 people gathered with their dogs to protest against breed-specific legislation targeting pit bulls . Many of those who gathered at the ‘Luv-A-Bully’ march dressed up in Halloween costumes, with a wider aim of raising awareness of the harsh treatment they believe pit bulls have received in the media of late.

Although the breed-specific legislation is yet to be implemented in Indianapolis, the pit bull lovers fear that it won’t be long until it is after Mayor Bart Peterson considered such a proposal earlier this year.

One of the major reasons for the bad press received by pit bulls in recent months is their association with dog fighting. Furthermore, the mauling to death of five-year old Ellie Lawrenson by a pit bull in the UK has widened awareness of the potentially dangerous nature of pit bulls, whilst a recent Panorama programme in the UK exposed the horrific nature and presence of dog fighting, with a European Parliament Written Declaration currently attempting to stamp out the savage sport.
