Nightclubs in Banbridge, County Down, are deploying sniffer dogs on their doors to help keep out drug users. The dogs, provided by a company specialising in dog handling and illegal drug detection, are usually used in airports to detect contraband. The first night the dogs were used saw drugs confiscated from ten people at the BLU nightclub at the Bannville House Hotel .
The springer spaniels handler claimed that people carrying drugs attempted to get rid of them having seen the dog on the door and believes the initiative could well be adopted by nightclubs in other areas. In addition to the advantage of being able to detect dogs, the dogs handler believes the calmness of the animals is another major advantage.
