Recent news relating to our canine friends indicates that the Police will soon not be able to seize or receive stray dogs, at least in Suffolk.
New regulations will prevent Suffolk Constabulary from taking in stray hounds at police stations around the county. The right and power of the police to seize or receive stray dogs is removed in Section 68 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.
The legislation comes into force from April 6th. After this point, the responsibility of dealing with stray dogs will be that of local authorities. The legislation has partially been introduced on account of the current confusion over who handles stray dog cases. In future, a single point of contact will save money and time when dog-owners are trying to locate their pets .
