Two Dogs Die Having Been Left in Car on Hot Day

The RSPCA are investigating the tragic deaths of two Boxer dogs who were left in a car with no windows open on a sunny day. A passerby became concerned having seen one of the dogs jumping up and down, seemingly in distress, in Hunstanton’s Valentine Road car park on Sunday afternoon, and subsequently called the police at 2.52pm. However, by the time the police arrived at the blue Vauxhall Vectra at 3.24pm, both dogs had died. The car owners aren’t believed to be familiar with the area, as it is reported they weren’t from West Norfolk but were just visiting.

A police spokesman said, ‘It’s been very hot and sunny here and there were no windows open on the car. The parcel shelf had come off and the boot was open’. The police have since referred the incident to the RSPCA, who revealed that they ‘are going to investigate with a view to possible prosecution’.

The RSPCA spokesman went on to advise dog owners of the potential heat inside a car on a hot day. She said, ‘people think about it if it is direct sunlight, but if it is not constantly sunny they don’t realise it can have the same effect. It can be very distressing for dogs and they can die quite quickly, so it’s very important that people take the message on board. Never leave them in a car in warm weather’.
