Pedigree Dogs Cost Owners More Than Mongrels

Thu, 21 Aug 2008

A new study by Saga Pet Insurance has revealed that pedigree dogs cost their owners 15 per cent more in vets fees than mongrels. The average vets’ bill for a mongrel in the UK stands at just over £320, but pedigrees set their owners back closer to £370. As pedigrees account for more than 75 per cent of the UK’s dogs, the extra cost amounts to more than £10 million in vets’ fees every week. The higher cost of pedigrees is largely due to a higher incidence of genetic diseases among pedigrees as a result of years of inbreeding. Meanwhile, the research also highlighted regional discrepancies, with the south east the most expensive part of the country for vets’ fees, with an average bill of nearly £350, compared with less than £230 in Wales.

Chief Executive of Saga, Andrew Goodall, commented that, ‘every pet owner knows that the cost of keeping a dog is high, but it is sad to see that costs for pedigree dogs have escalated due to inbreeding. Without appropriate insurance in place, owners could be faced with the prospect of having to withhold care because it’s simple too expensive. Whether you have a pedigree pooch or a mongrel, it is important to make sure they are adequately covered’.
