Scientists Perform First Ever Successful Commercial Dog Clone

Tue, 05 Aug 2008

South Korean scientists are claiming to have completed the commercial cloning of a pet dog for the first time. The scientists from Seoul National University unveiled the dogs at a press conference in Seoul on Tuesday. The five puppies are clones of an American lady’s pit bull terrier, called Booger. Bernann McKinney paid £25,000 for the South Korean scientists to create a number of embryos from carefully preserved skin cells taken from Booger’s ear tissue prior to his death. The embryos were subsequently planted into two surrogate mother dogs, who gave birth to the dogs three months later.

Whilst this is the first time a dog has ever been commercially cloned, the team of scientists had experience of cloning dogs, with Professor Lee Byeong-chun part of the team who cloned the world’s first ever cloned dog in 2005 – Snuppy the Afghan hound . RNL Bio are the company responsible for arranging the cloning, and have indicated that they are open to taking further bookings, as they look to broaden to other markets. Chief executive Ra Jeong-Chan reportedly said, ‘For my next project I will consider cloning camels for rich people in the Middle East’.
