A new survey has been published by a pet insurance firm has found that an English Setter is the most expensive dog breed to own. The survey lists the top 10 costliest dog breeds, taking into account amount each breed costs their owners in vet fees. An English Setter was found to cost pet owners £6,955 over the course of its 11.2 year lifespan, working out at £621 a year in veterinary costs. Whilst the survey found that the Setter is the most expensive dog over the course of its life time, it wasn’t the most expensive animal per year. A Great Dane, with an average lifespan of 8.5 years, costs a total of £6,630, making it the second most expensive dog over the course of its lifetime, though given its shorter lifespan; the average yearly cost is a whopping £780, in vet bills alone.
Poodles ranked third in the survey, whilst Rottweilers and Dobermans were fourth and five respectively, with an apparently equal average lifespan of 9.8 years. A Rottweiler is allegedly £51 more expensive per year, however, with an overall vet bill of £5,215 compared to the Doberman’s £4,714.
