Number of Stray Dogs in York on the Up

Tue, 02 Dec 2008

New figures have revealed that the number of stray dogs in York is set to rise significantly this year. Figures from the City of York Council estimate that the city is on course to have nearly 260 stray dogs during this year, an increase of roughly a third from the 190 of last year. The figures are based on the first seven months of the 2008/09 year, in which 152 strays were picked up in York. Almost three quarters of the animals were returned to their owners, a fifth were rehomed and five per cent had to be put down.

Head of environmental health and trading standards at City of York Council, Colin Rumford, said: ‘Owning a dog is a major commitment and I would urge anyone who is planning to buy any pet to think very carefully before going ahead. Dogs give a huge amount of pleasure, but they require a great deal of care, exercise and financial commitment. There are also a number of laws that affect dog owners, making it an offence to allow their pets to stray, cause a nuisance or for them not to clear up after their dog. Remember that a dog is for life, not just for Christmas .’
