Mobile phone operator Orange has teamed up with Retrieva to offer a tracking system for dogs. With an average of 2,500 dogs lost or stolen each week in the UK last year, the partnership is offering dog owners an instant tracking and alert system that is linked directly to their mobile phones . The Retrieva Tracking and Anti-theft collar package costs an initial £250, and enables dog owners to see the location of their pet on their mobile phone using GPS and GSM technology.
Animal owners can open the bundled mapping application on their mobile phone and request the location of the collar, which will appear on their screen. Furthermore, if their phone is GPS enabled, they will also be able to see their location in relation to that of the dog. The collar is waterproof and cut-proof and has an Orange SIM card inbuilt. The collar is accompanied by an ICyou portable docking station which recharges the unit and alerts dog owners if their pet leaves the house unexpectedly.
In addition to the £250 one off cost for the collar, the ICyou unit and the ViewRanger off road phone mapping system, there is a £9.99 monthly cost to operate the service, which will be launched in the UK in the near future.
