MP Calls for Greater Controls on Dangerous Dogs

Thu, 14 Feb 2008

An MP has backed calls for greater controls on dangerous dogs following further media coverage of recent dog attacks. Michael Foster, MP for Hastings and Rye, has reportedly given his support to "stronger powers to order the control of certain dogs which are known to have aggressive tendencies".

Amongst the measures Mr Foster is alluding to are greater powers to muzzle, control or re-home dangerous dogs, as well as greater powers to deter irresponsible dog owners including fines, bans from dog ownership or even imprisonment. Such measures are currently the subject of a Parliamentary motion.

Since the continued existence of dangerous dogs on the streets of the UK was exposed by the media, dog fighting and the aggressive behaviour of some dogs has been given greater media spotlight. Given the recent high profile instances of dog attacks, it is unsurprising that the government are looking to act.
