McDonalds has apologised to a blind man after a member of staff order him and his guide dog to leave. The incident occurred at Oxford city centre McDonalds, as Leamington resident Ian Foulds was on a day trip. Although shocked at the behaviour of the member of staff in Oxford, Mr Foulds has been so impressed with the treatment he has received at his local McDonalds branch that he nominated it for a Guide Dogs Open your Doors award.
Under the Disability Discrimination Act, it is an offence for any restaurant, shop or business to refuse entry to a working assistance dog. Although Mr Foulds has stated he has yet to receive any offer of compensation, McDonalds have issued an unreserved apology and have reviewed their training procedures as a result of the incident.
