Five dogs have died following a fire at an animal sanctuary. The sanctuary, a single storey wooden house situated near Markyate, broke into flames in the early hours of Friday February 1st. It is believed the fire was caused by a faulty electrical socket .
The owner, 38 year old Tamara Lloyd, managed to escape the fire, but was unable to rescue the dogs due to the thick smoke. Miss Lloyd, an animal carer for over 20 years, was able to save 34 horses and over a dozen terrapins from a nearby barn which was later encapsulated in the fire.
Such was the scale of the fire that fifty firefighters were in attendance, two of whom suffered electrical shocks as they attempted to save animals trapped in a metal horse box that had been charged by fallen wires.
