New laws coming into effect in April will make it compulsory for dogs in Seoul to have an identification microchip implanted. Seouls dog owners must pay 19,000 won (roughly £10) to have the chip implanted. There will be a 200,000 won fine for those dog owners who fail to comply with the legislation .
The South Korean capital is following the lead of the likes of Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore in implanting microchips in pets . The scheme has been viewed as a success in those countries, dramatically helping when it comes to finding lost pets . In Seoul, an estimated 15,000 of the 650,000 dogs end up lost or abandoned every year a figure that is expected to diminish as a result of the new legislation.
