A new adopt-a-dog campaign has been launched nationwide highlighting the vast number of abandoned dogs in need of a new home . The campaign has been launched following the festive season a period in which more pets are abandoned than at any other time. In the ten days around Christmas 2007, around 270 dogs arrived at Battersea Dogs Home, though the number of dogs abandoned in total will unfortunately be a multiple of that figure.
The campaigns organizers have released figures showing that nearly 8,000 dogs were put down in 2007 as homes could not be found for them. The campaign was launched as 100 dogs and their owners walked from Battersea Dogs Home to Battersea Park. Amongst those on the walk was actor Neil Morrissey, himself the owner of a previously abandoned dog. It is hoped that the campaign will be able to raise half a million pounds in the first quarter of 2008 for the UKs dog rescue centres .
