New laws are to be introduced in north Norfolk in 2008 in an attempt to crack down on dog fouling. Under the 1996 Dogs Fouling of Land Act, dog fouling bans in north Norfolk only apply to built-up areas with speed limits of 40 mph or less.
However, the 2005 Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act extends the ban to all areas. As a result, North Norfolk District Council now have the power to fine offenders £80, and persistent offenders can be issued with court fines of up to £1,000. In addition to the greater area encompassed, the main advantage of the news laws is their simplicity.
A spokesman for the council reportedly said that tickets would be handed out selectively, and the powers would not be overused or abused.
