New research has suggested that between 25 and 40 per cent of dogs across Europe are either overweight or obese . The findings are from a study by Dr Alex German, who runs Europes first companion animal weight management referral clinic, and have serious implications for dog veterinary care.
Pfizer Animal Health are offering a new treatment to assist weight loss programmes . The treatment is only available through veterinary surgeons, and is used alongside dietary and exercise modification. The liquid drug can be added to the dogs food and treatment may last for as long as 12 months.
It is well publicised that overweight dogs are likely to have a shorter life expectancy, whilst serious health problems including diabetes and heart disease are also linked to weight problems.
