Residents of Scarborough have launched a petition campaigning against a ban on dogs on the local beaches. A ban is already in place running from the beginning of May to the end of September, though if the proposed extension is passed, a permanent ban will be introduced as of March 2009.
The proposed ban would be extended across Scarboroughs North Bay and South Bay, as well as Whitby West beach and the beach in Filey. The beach is typically a popular route for owners to walk their dog, and although some of those behind the petition have indicated a willingness to accept a ban at times of the year in which the beach would be particularly popular, the idea of a permanent ban has unsurprisingly evoked staunch opposition amongst dog owners .
