Scientists Test New Dog Sound Software

Tue, 22 Jan 2008

Scientists are claiming to have invented new computer software that is able to decipher the meaning of various dog noises. The programme has been developed by a team of Hungarian experts, and is able to differentiate between the sounds of different dogs. The software was tested on 6,000 sounds from 14 dogs and the scientists claim it was able to determine the correct meaning for each sound.

Whilst the scientists suggest it could be used to improve dog well-being, it should be noted that only simple meanings could be attached to the noises. Furthermore, the software was only correct four times out of ten – a success level that humans could achieve. Despite the flaws, the software indicates it may be possible to develop a more sophisticated programme of its type in the future.
