Dog Fighting Rife in North East Scotland

Tue, 01 Jul 2008

The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) has revealed that illegal dog fighting is more common in north east Scotland than anywhere else in the country. The SSPCA claims that the number of reported cases of dog fighting as soared in recent years, with Aberdeen, Dundee, Fraserburgh, Macduff and Peterhead the most likely areas in which dog fights are held.

The animal welfare experts have warned that the dogs’ owners take a sense of pride in owning a top fighting dog. However, it was also speculated that drug dealing may be one of the reasons for the increased incidences of dog fighting, as evidenced by the link between drugs and dog fighting in the north east. Basements and warehouses are typically used for dog fighting, though the injuries suffered by dogs during a fight can often cause suspicion amongst the public.

The SSPCA can charge and report people involved in dog fighting for animal cruelty, and have deployed plain clothes units across Scotland to follow up reports of dog fighting. The media have also played an active role in investigating dog fighting.
