The People’s Dispensary For Sick Animals (PDSA) has revealed that the problem of pet obesity is at its worst ever level in Scotland . Official figures reveal that dog obesity stands at 30 per cent, but the charity has suggested this fails to reflect the true number of overweight pets, with an estimated 70 per cent of dogs encountered by clinics suffering from weight problems . Meanwhile, the PDSA also revealed that the problem is rising sharply amongst cats .
The charity has claimed that owners of overweight animals risk ‘killing their pets with kindness’, as the dogs are more vulnerable to heart and kidney disease, diabetes and arthritis, whilst many overweight pets also experience breathing difficulties. On average, the life expectancy of an overweight dog is cut by two years.
The PDSA have urged pet owners not to feed their animals scraps or leftovers, as these small pieces of food mount up and lead to weight increases. The charity recommends pet owners try the low fat meals on offer in supermarkets, with perseverance necessary in order to see the positive results that follow with time.
