Dog-hair jumpers is the latest must-have item

Tue, 18 Mar 2008

There are some people whose love for their dogs shows no bounds.

The Willis’s from Newcastle have found a way of keeping their pet dogs close to them even though they are no longer with them. They have knitted pullovers from the fur.

Beth Willis collected the fur from her carpets over a period of years to knit the jumpers for her husband, Brian and herself.

Mrs Willis, 71, knitted the first jumper from Kara a white Samoyed who died in 1996. The breed found in north Russia has fur that is almost waterproof and very soft.

Mrs Willis said: "It is not actually a hair but a wool, which is why it is so good for clothes.

"It would just fall off the dogs and I would run a wet hand over the carpet and pick it up.

"We found out from the breeders we got the pups from that it was possible to use their coat for clothes.

"They go through the wash just like ordinary clothes and they last for ever.

The couples other dog died six years ago, Penny who was a Swedish Lapphund. By that time Mrs Willis had started the next jumper.
