Animal Welfare Organisations Oppose Dog Renting Company

Wed, 28 May 2008

Animal welfare organisations have hit out at a new American company which allows people to borrow a pet once a week for a fee of £70. Flexpetz charges customers £279 a month and operates in both America and the UK . Flexpetz believe the system helps to avoid pets being neglected by families who don’t have sufficient time to care for them, and the company carried out checks on homes prior to hiring out the dog, according to a UK representative. The company also has a policy of not renting the dog to more than five clients, and the dog stays with a family at times when he or she is not being hired.

Flexpetz has been heavily criticised, however, by animal welfare organisations. The RSPCA, one of many organisations opposed to the idea, claim that the dog would be distressed by being rented out so frequently and that the lack of a secure routine would harm its chances of forming bonds. The company’s London branch opened recently and have made an 18 month old Pomeranian called Gucci the first dog available for rent.
