Derbyshire Couple Claim to Own Worlds Oldest Dog

Fri, 23 May 2008

The owners of a dog believed to be 29 years old are trying to prove that their pet Labrador cross is the oldest dog in the world. A couple based in Derbyshire, claim to have bought the dog from the RSPCA 26 years ago and 76 year old David Richardson said the dog was three years old at the time of purchase. However, the RSPCA doesn’t have any records of selling the mixed breed dog, Bella, and without the necessary paperwork the Guinness World Records will not ratify the claim.

In canine years, Bella is now over 200 years old if Mr Richardson is correct about her age, and although the couple thought she would be the oldest dog in England, they revealed their shock at discovering she may be the oldest dog in the world. Mr Richardson’s partner Daisy Cooper admitted that Bella was showing signs of her considerable age, with just two teeth remaining, but continues to go for walks in the park.

The current record for the world’s oldest ever dog stands at 29 years of age, held by an Australian sheepdog called Bluey. An American dog named Butch came close to the record recently but died in 2003, though it is believed Bella would become the world’s oldest ever dog if the required paperwork can be found.
