Record Number of Dog Attacks on Lambs in the Pentland Hills

Fri, 16 May 2008

Patrols in the Pentland Hills in Edinburgh have recorded a record number of attacks by dogs on lambs. More sheep have been attacked by dogs in the area so far in 2008 than at the same stage of any previous year, with six incidences of sheep and lambs being killed or put down as a result of dog attacks. The true number may in fact be greater, though have not been reported.

In addition to the lamb killings, there have been a series of attacks on pregnant ewes with frequent reports of dogs chasing sheep which may have resulted in the death of unborn lambs. Farmers are permitted to shoot any dog harassing sheep, though just one dog has been shot this year despite the greater number of attacks on sheep and lambs.

More patrols have been deployed to deal with the attacks, whilst all pet owners have been asked to keep their dogs on a lead.
