Man Convicted For Dog Fighting Involvement

A man has been jailed for six months for his involvement in dog fighting . 40 year old Liaquat Ali of Accrington, Lancashire, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a pit bull type dog and was convicted of keeping a premise for the purposes of dog fighting and causing two animals to fight. Ali, who had arranged numerous dog fights, is the first person to be convicted of the charges since the introduction of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. The RSPCA welcomed the decision, labelling it a landmark case.

The case dates back to when the RSPCA and Lancashire Constabulary searched two of Ali’s properties in June 2007. At one property, there was blood on the walls which was later revealed as being from more than one dog, whilst at the other, officers found a gaunt dog called Enzo who had been locked in a wooden box without food or water. Ali was also found to have videos of dog fights on his mobile phone .

RSPCA chief inspector Ian Briggs said: ‘We've never brought a prosecution on these specific allegations before under the new legislation, but the evidence against Mr Ali was overwhelming. This is a landmark case and we're very pleased with the magistrate's ruling.’
