Retired Police Dog Able to Walk Thanks to Buggy

A former police dog that was on the verge of being put down is able to walk again thanks to a two wheeled buggy. Max, a springer spaniel, had to retire from his police drugs work due to his arthritic hips. Having developed arthritis and hip dysplasia two years ago, his condition has deteriorated significantly over that period.

However, a Taunton based police charity which helps retired police dogs has paid for the two wheeled buggy that alleviates pressure from the dog’s hips. The ten year old animal is looked after by police inspectors Anne Higgins and Mike Ashwin at their home on the Somerset and Devon border.

Inspector Mike Ashwin of Avon and Somerset police, said, ‘We were able to find these wheels and that’s given him back a great quality of life. You can see how happy he is and it is all about Max. It’s about his quality of life and we hope that continues far into the future. There is life in the old dog yet as they say’.

Meanwhile, Inspector Anne Higgins of Devon and Cornwall police, said, ‘He had a part to play in putting many criminals away so we do have a duty to him. The chariot is a two-wheeled buggy and is attached to Max by pants made from material normally used for wetsuits.
