Face Transplant Dog Unveiled

Tue, 25 Nov 2008

It has been revealed that a dog successfully underwent a face transplant two years ago. The pet beagle, called Wing Wen, was photographed prior to his surgery with the donor dog, who sadly was killed as a result of the operation. The operation provided the animal with new skin, a new ear as well as eyelids. The dog is now helping human face graft research in Fuzhou, China, and is said to have made a good recovery.

Zhen Shengwu, Fujian Provincial Hospital’s chief plastic surgeon, commented, ‘Wing is mentally and physically healthy after the surgery which was a great success. Wing Wen recovered quickly and most observers would think the dog was born with a mixed-coloured face. But you can see the difference from the ears. Wen’s original ear on the right side hangs down, while the new ear on the other side stands up.’

Dr Shengwu added, ‘Since a dog’s face is close to a human’s, it’s a good reference for future human face transplants. To some patients whose faces were greatly damaged because of burning, car accidents, animal attacks or tumours, face-changing surgery can greatly improve their quality of life. So it’s worthwhile to advertise it with examples like this.’
