Man Rescued by Schoolboys After Climbing Down a Cliff to Save His Dog

Tue, 04 Nov 2008

A group of schoolboys have rescued a man who had been trapped at the foot of a cliff. Stephen Kelly had climbed 12 metres (40 feet) down the cliff at Brean Down in Somerset in an attempt to rescue his pet Labrador who had fallen over the edge. The 32 year old from Swindon, Wiltshire, had been able to pull his dog Molly out of the water, but became stuck on a ledge himself.

Mr Kelly’s girlfriend, Charlotte LeCouteur searched for help upon seeing her boyfriend become stuck, and found a school party and their teacher who were on a half-term abseiling trip. Miss LeCouteur said, ‘Luckily, they were going abseiling for the day, so they had ropes in their rucksacks so they were able to come to our rescue. They made pulleys from the ropes and were able to winch Molly and Steve up to dry land’.

Mr Kelly said, ‘My initial thought was, get down there and get her out of the water. I knew I was putting myself in danger, but at the end of the day, I didn’t want to lose my dog’.
