A worried vet has urged pet owners to vaccinate their dogs following the outbreak of a debilitating disease. Vet Martyn Phippen of Pelyn Surgery in Lostwithiel has warned that he is seeing as many as four cases of kennel cough each day – significantly more than the typical one case a month. Vet Phippen said, ‘If left untreated, it can sometimes lead to a form of bronchitis in dogs, but it is not a killer. It is distressing for the animal, which cannot stop coughing, and a bout of coughing usually ends in a violent wretch. From time to time you can get an outbreak but it is very easily treated’.

Kennel cough is a highly contagious disease which affects dogs’ respiratory systems, and has numerous bacteria and viruses associated with it. The disease can be transmitted between dogs by droplets in the air or direct contact, and is also known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis . The main symptom is the sudden onset of violent coughing in dogs which may have been exposed to other, infected dogs. Dogs can be vaccinated against the disease with a squirt up the nose for around £23.
