Dogs Trust Claim Dogs Improve Health

Thu, 23 Oct 2008

The Dogs Trust has claimed it is able to prove that dogs are beneficial to their owners’ health . The trust has launched the Canine Charter for Human Health in an attempt to outline such benefits to doctors. The charter follows the charity’s work in compiling independent academic research from across the global to demonstrate the ways in which people benefit from interaction with dogs.

Amongst the nine benefits listed are claims that dog owners make fewer trips to the doctor, are less prone to depression and high blood pressure, and have a better immune system and lower levels of anxiety and stress . The Charter, which is to be distributed to GPs, counsellors and therapists across the country, also claims that trained dogs can detect serious illnesses in their owners.

Chief Executive of the Trust, Clarissa Baldwin, said, ‘Dogs Trust has always promoted the benefits of owning a dog, but it is clear to see that there is also strong academic support to show that there are serious health benefits as well. Many dog owners are already aware of many of the benefits their dogs bring, but we want to take the message out further to the wider population’.
