A vet has called for dog owners to have their pets vaccinated against a deadly virus that has taken the lives of nearly 20 puppies in Hemel Hempstead this year. The Parvovirus can see young puppies die from excessive vomiting and diarrhoea after contracting the disease through contaminated faeces, grass or soil. Dogs that are either very young or very old are most susceptible to the virus, which can kill within five to seven days of a dog contracting it.
Stuart Glassborow, a vet of Medivets on Marlowes in Hemel Hempstead, said, We have unfortunately seen an outbreak of Parvovirus and as a result have had to euthanize dogs that could not defend themselves from the effects of it. Although in some dogs treatment will succeed, many die regardless of the time and energy veterinary teams pour into them. It is possible to vaccinate against it and give them every chance to defeat this most deadly of diseases.
Just 25 per cent of dogs in Hemel Hempstead are said to be vaccinated against Parvovirus. Any dog without the vaccination could be at risk, and are advised to get the jab which costs around £60.
