A partially deaf springer spaniel has survived for more than five weeks in the Scottish hills. The dog, called Oliver, had gone missing on February 24th following a walk with his owner Deborah Wyton and her three other dogs up Ben Fhionnlaidh near Glen Etive, where Oliver ran off. Mrs Wyton and her husband Michael gave up looking for their pet after hours of searching, and thought that would be the last they saw of Oliver.
Astonishingly, the 12 and a half year old animal, who had suffered a stroke just 12 weeks previously, was found alive curled up in a shed on April 2nd. The shed was eight miles from his home as the crow flies, but 44 by road. The man who found Oliver fed him and gave him water, before cleaning his tag of mud to discover who his owner was. Mrs Wyton spoke of her joy upon hearing that Oliver had been found, saying she thought she nearly deafened the man who told her the good news with her scream.
Strangely, the story about Oliver follows news from Australia about a dog which fell off a boat and was thought to have drowned only to be found four months later on a remote Australian island.
