A senior partner at a Northamptonshire based veterinary centre has described the treatment of an 11 year old Old English mastiff as the worst he has even seen in his career . Allan Dick has worked as a vet at the Croft Veterinary Centre for over 25 years, but was nonetheless shocked at the condition of the Old English mastiff .
The pet, called Henry, had to be put down in December 2007 and his owner, 71 year old David Blaxter, has since been found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog . Shockingly, Mr Blaxter had appeared with dogs at Crufts pedigree dog show on a number of occasions, even acting as a judge at some dog shows, yet he still allowed the animal to degenerate into such an appalling condition. Mr Blaxter and his wife were ordered to pay £4,130 in costs and fined by the magistrates, who decided the couple were jointly responsible for the shocking failure to provide the animal with any veterinary treatment.
Henry had a cancerous tumour in his mouth which had caused his lower jaw to collapse. He consequently found it very difficult to eat, leaving him extremely emaciated, leading to bed sores as he was too weak to stand.
