Women Banned from Keeping Pets After Failing to Feed Dog

A woman has been banned from keeping animals for five years after she admitted to failing to feed her pet dog on occasions, despite spending £20 a week on cigarettes. The mother of three from Bilston owned a Staffordshire bull terrier, called Roxy, which became so thin that the RSPCA officers could see her bones through her coat, and was also suffering fur loss, had mites and was mildly dehydrated.

25 year old Louise Lewis pleaded guilty to three charges of failing to provide the animal with an adequate diet, not investigating why it was underweight and failing to provide it with veterinary care. Mrs Lewis also revealed that she had not taken her dog to the vet for its injections, and did not take it on walks as she felt it got enough exercise in the garden . She was also given a 12 month community order and ordered to pay £250 toward the RSPCA’s court costs.

The ‘significantly emaciated’ dog had been found chewing on empty yoghurt pots and subdued following a tip off from a nearby resident. The pet was subsequently taken away by the RSPCA, who revealed that the dog may suffer permanent hair loss around the muzzle as a result of its skin disease .
