A woman has been banned from keeping dogs for a year after she failed to get her pet dog treatment from a vet despite the animal suffering from a tumour and severely infected teeth. Hilary Stewart from Greenock admitted neglecting her pet dog Lucy, having been taken to court by the Scottish SPCA.
The pet's condition was so severe that it had difficulty walking, and eventually had to be put down. Chief Inspector at the SSPCA, Hamish Mackintosh, described the case as one of ‘gross neglect’, and said the dog’s life span would have been extended had she been allowed to receive basic routine care.
It was revealed that the dog had not been groomed or clipped for over 18 months, leaving her ears and tail appearing twice their normal length. Indeed, her hair was so long that she had problems with her vision. She also suffered from a number of dog diseases, including an oral infection and a gum disease, and was left emaciated.
The 51 year old’s solicitor declared that she didn’t have any other animals and had no intention of keeping any. She defended her client by claiming that certain events in her family had led to her neglecting her pet.
